www.HowToDeal.com

Our excitement was building for Nick's mom to come out to visit for the weekend. We've been looking for a good deal on a flight home for her because she got such a great deal on a flight out here.

Last night Nick answered his phone and it was his mom, calling with the 1st in a series of phone calls we knew were coming but didn't want to get. They are calling in hospice to come evaluate his Grandma, they are coming tomorrow at 1 to evaluate after they talk to her doctors. Therefore there is a chance she won't be coming out to visit now which we totally understand.

His Grandma still lives in the same house that his mom grew up in on High Street in Dalton, Ohio. Right across the street used to be the school that she attended. (It was torn down/bought out by Smucker's I believe just a couple years ago). There are a lot of memories in that home. She used to work for a company that made those delicious cake roll, twinkie looking things that you can buy at grocery stores.

I know you're not supposed to have favourites, but I think with Grandparent's it's allowed. One of Nick's Grandpa's died when he was too young to really remember, and the other one wasn't all there for many years, and was never really close to him. For as long as I've known him, he's just had the 2 Grandma's, and this one takes the cake on "favourite". Every time we went home to Ohio to visit, we would go sit at her kitchen table, drink water and snack on the chocolate from the candy dish!

2 years or so ago, she started using oxygen on a regular basis, because the emphysema was making it hard to breath. That's what happens after a lifetime of smoking.

Almost every night for probably close to a year, Nick's mom has been coming home from work and going straight to her mom's. Like my mom says: She will never regret the minutes, hours and days she has spent with her mom. But boy o'boy is it going to be a hard transition for her.

Any thoughts on what I can do for Nick to make him feel comforted?
